The United Arab Emirates ' Martian orbiter Hope just provided a spectacular unexampled view of Deimos , one of Mars ' two pocket-size moons . According to findings presented at theEuropean Geosciences Unionmeeting this week , the observation from a flyby on March 10 indicate that Deimos is made of the same cloth as Mars itself — suggest the moon form at the same fourth dimension as Mars , and is n’t a becharm asteroid , as some theory have proposed .

These observance revealed a never - before - seen perspective of Mars and Deimos .

The smooth, gray moon Deimos hovers in front of the rocky red surface of Mars

Mars' tiny moon, Deimos, appears to be made of the same sorts of rocks as Mars itself, challenging theories about its formation.

" Mars was in the setting — and that was just brain - fellate , honestly , " mission leaderHessa Al Matroushi , of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre in Dubai , distinguish Nature.com .

Humanity has been exploring Mars for decade , but our probes mostly stayed near to the Red Planet ’s airfoil . Deimos is tidally locked with Mars , meaning the same side always present the planet , so probes near Mars see only one side of the small Sun Myung Moon , too — that is , until Hope arrive on the scene .

Also do it as the Emirates Mars Mission ( EMM ) , Hope launched in mid-2020 andarrived at Marsin early 2021 . EMM is the first interplanetary ballistic capsule from an Arab country , and it primarily investigated changes in the Martian atmosphere . Once the probe completed that primary commission , the EMM squad decided to use the remaining redundant propellant to boost the spacecraft into a higher orbit above Deimos , allowing the scientists to envision the far side of the Martian moon in detail for the first time .

The smooth gray surface of Deimos

Deimos appears to be low in carbon, suggesting that it is not a captured asteroid, but an ancient piece of Mars itself.

epitome from Hope ’s first Deimos flyby bring out the petite lunation — which is only 7.7 Admiralty mile ( 12.4 kilometers ) wide , or about half the length of Manhattan , New York — in multiple wavelengths fromultraviolettoinfrared . Deimos appear relatively like at various wavelength , indicating that it consists of Mars - like material or else of the usual carbon copy - rich stuff of asteroids .

" If there were carbon or organic fertilizer , we would see spikes in specific wavelengths , " Al Matroushi add together .

This is surprising , as scientists often considered Deimos a captured asteroid . Instead , it seems like a chunk of Mars itself , perhaps broken off in a long - agone hit . Earth ’s moon is thought to have formedfrom a like collision , gazillion of years ago — perhaps giving our planet one more thing in common with its bouldered red neighbour .
