medico Who come back for a run of six episode starting this weekend , and our hopes are high . If nothing else , we know there will be witty dialogue , insanely cunning player , and intellect - bending plot . But we ’re trust for more than that .

Because these six episodes are n’t just the conclusion of Who season six — they ’re the culmination of two years of open - terminate storytelling . And we ’re hop it all make up off . Here ’s our wishlist for time of year 6.5 . With spoilers for everything that ’s already air …

Doctor Who ’s never seen anything like Steven Moffat ’s incumbency as showrunner . Not just because of the long - feed storylines that go back to the Tennant era , with questions throng on interrogative . Not just because of the complex plotting that require you to keep rails of multiple timelines . Not just because of the cornucopia of weirdlymetaphysical demon . But also because it ’s the most relationship - orient the show ’s ever been .

This is really the story of two couples , Amy and Rory , and River and the Doctor , and everything else is absolutely subordinate to that . suppose about it : There were really only four characters in “ The Big Bang , ” the 5th - time of year stopping point , and any guest stars were retain very much to the sidelines . The only monster / foe in that instalment was a half - petrified Dalek that showed up for a few moment . For all Russell T. Davies ’ much - vaunted emphasis on relationships , he never would have presume give us a season coda in which there are no other major characters besides the habitue .

So yeah , Moffat is try something fiendishly ambitious here . And he ’s the skillful there is at what he does . Partly because of those thing , we ’re going to ask a lot of him .

Last Of Us 7 Interview

Here ’s what we ’d like to see in the next six episodes :

1 ) Some answers .

This one is sort of a gimme . The list of mysteries in Moffat ’s huge sweeping storyline is almost as long as Romana ’s full name . There ’s the DIY TARDIS in the attic of James Corden ’s house , which turn up again in the tunnels under Florida . There ’s the fact that the Silence ( apparently ) made the TARDIS muck up up and cracked the cosmos . There ’s the death of the Future Doctor . Plus , why the eyepatch lady is at war with him , and how she ’s connected to the Silence . And that ’s just the tip of the iceberg lettuce . We ’ve been foretell loads of answers , and lease ’s hope it all forms a reasonably coherent flick at the end of the day . Or at the very least , a newer , well mystifier .

2 ) River Song mentioning an adventure she had on her own .

The Doctor has adventures without River Song all the prison term , why should n’t she have some without him ? Just an off - hand reference , that ’s all I require . Like , “ There was the planet of the giant hummingbirds . Oh await , you were n’t there for that one . ” I recollect that ’s all I ’m expect for , to varnish the deal on River Song being one of my best-loved Who character ever . She ’s already close to being the female vis-a-vis to Captain Jack . She ’s brilliant , stylish , rum , flirty and a little bit tragic — now all she has to be is independent , and she ’s my submarine always .

3 ) The return of Awesome Amy

Amy Pond was a really fun character when she set out — she was cute and demented and kept challenging the Doctor all the sentence . you could particularly see it in “ Flesh and Stone , ” which was the first sequence that Karen Gillan actually filmed . Amy is being hyper and become in the Doctor ’s side over and over , like a crazed weasel . Lately , she ’s pull away into the shadows as Rory has gotten more awesome — and in fact , her most recent stint was as a damosel in distress . How about see more of Amy ’s take - tutelage side again ? And more of her arc would be nice , too — she had the commencement of a squeamish arc in season five , with her trustingness issues and her realizing that she ca n’t stand to lose Rory . But I feel like that ’s gotten fall back lately , and we ’re just getting one short letter from her : that she really does love Rory and not the Doctor . subject matter received !

4 ) Some more naked emotion from Matt Smith

And by “ bare , ” I do n’t mean that we require to have another Matt Smith shower scene — although that would be welcome too . But it ’s more that we need to feel more from Matt Smith ’s Doctor . He ’s already one of my two or three favorite doctor , for his sense of humor and cleverness , and the path he can make Moffat ’s off - beat dialog sparkle . But when I remember of my favorite Eleventh Doctor moments , they ’re the unity where he lets some passion shine through . Like his abbreviated moment of rage in “ The Beast Below . ” His warmth and sorrowfulness in his one Sarah Jane Adventures appearance , written by Russell T. Davies . His compassion in “ Vincent and the Doctor . ” And his anger , followed by impuissance , in “ The Doctor ’s Wife . ” I know that Matt Smith can deliver a hard aroused performance , because I ’ve seen it . But I have n’t felt it in a heap of Moffat ’s late scripts , where any brief moments of emotion are annotate over , or rushed through , or just distill into a brief scene of the Doctor looking unhappily into the distance before snapping out of it . Given that Moffat ’s whole story electric discharge is about relationships and feeling ( see above ) , we need to feel this .

5 ) make bold to go from A to B occasionally .

It ’s gotten clearer that Moffat often startle from A to Q and then back to C , in his plotting , because it ’s playfulness and clever , and we enjoy it . But sometimes , when you have a bad moment — OMG , Amy has just shot a piffling baby ! — you postulate to show us what happens next , instead of dart a cue card that says “ six month later on . ” Moffat is the passkey of dexterity of deal , move token around so tight that we ca n’t follow the rapid motion , and he have it off to introduce unexampled random elements just as we ’re reeling from the last big reveal . But sometimes this backfires : the lesbian square-toed cannibal Silurian and the Sontaran nursemaid were my favorite affair in “ A Good Man Goes to War , ” but they were also a immense beguilement from dish out with the fact that Amy had been a prisoner for months and she ’d been forced to give birth in a sterile clean way . presumptively after the Doctor melted Rory ’s married woman into a flock of snot , the two of them had a difficult conversation — which we never catch to see . I ’m not saying we need all mopeyness all the meter , like RTD gave us , but sometimes when you go from A to Q to C , you miss B. And B might help oneself to set up what happens afterward .

Moffat is the master of publish smashing character moments , but as Kay Reindlpoints out , oftentimes those minute do n’t experience like they tot up to an electric discharge — just a collection of nice second . Sometimes it would be nice to see more of a procession , which requires take care the consequences , and each moment after the last .

6 ) A moral to the faery - tale

Season five was very much queer - tale - themed , something which seems to be less in evidence so far in season six . And there were a lot of interesting faery - tale element thrown into the mixing : the girl who wait all night for a adept to come back , only to have him re-emerge years by and by . A crack in the bedroom wall which grows to bury up everyone the girl care about . A boy who waits 2,000 years for the young woman to get along back to him , and thus gain the right to marry her . A little little girl who trust in stars when nobody else does , and thus is able to aid impart herself back to life . A hero who gives himself up to oblivion , only to be pull through by the girl ’s feeling in him after everyone else has leave him . And so on . Rewatching these episode , those component come out more powerfully , and a running theme seems to be the magnate of faith , and memory . The Crack makes you forget , but you may overcome it by having organized religion .

But although “ The Big Bang ” contains some of Moffat ’s cleverest writing and some of Matt Smith ’s most brilliant moments , I find like it stops short of making a substantial statement — maybe because in the end , Amy bringing the Doctor back is too quick and painless . Or maybe just because there ’s so much going on in it , and there ’s no scoundrel in the episode . In any case , I feel like now that Moffat has layered all of season six ’s complicated family melodrama on top of time of year five ’s fairy - tale intricacy , we sort of need to get a Statement . A moral to the pouf narrative .

7 ) clean a scoundrel .

I think that ’s the other thing Moffat ’s needed all along — a secure baddie , to ground all of this . If you ’re going to have one individual ongoing plot line , lasting more than two years , then you need a individual scoundrel to go with it . A Voldemort . A Darth Vader . I was really excited when the Silence turned up at the starting line of time of year six , because they seemed to be the over - curve nemesis the Crack storyline had needed to reveal . And then they were beat relatively well , and suddenly there was Madame Kovarian with her eyepatch and her one leer oculus . ( We glimpse her in the first step few installment , but only briefly . ) Part of what makes a substantial conclusion is watching a supreme villain that you ’ve acquire to abominate over the course of a year or two finally get what ’s coming to them . Like watching Buffy finally mystify the crap out of Glory at the end of Buffy season five . I ’m really hoping that the Silence , or Madame Kovarian , or someone really , gets boost to main scoundrel position , so there ’s a villain for all this to revolve around .

Moffat is one of the most talented , funniest , creepiest writer ever to script Doctor Who . Here ’s hop the conclusion of time of year six pays off all of our stupendous anticipation , and gives us what we ’ve always want from him .
