Supernatural has reached a kind of emotional event horizonwhere the Winchesters are come to . After so many repetitive tear - jerkingconflicts , they ’ve crack into a sort of drama singularity , from which noreal emotion can break loose . But last night ’s sequence still deform a lot of pathosout of a couple of side characters .

At all . numb soul either goto Hell or just hang around the caul , as ghosts , incessantly . Kevin ’s last wish isfor Moose and Squirrel to go encounter his mom , who he believes is still alive — and finally , the boy do rule her , chained up in a storage facility that Crowley lease in Wichita .
This storyline is kind of intense for a few reasons : 1)Kevin died on Dean ’s watch , and his decease was completely preventable . 2 ) Lindahas been chained up for a year and nobody bothered to look for her , even after Crowley strongly hintedshe was animated . 3 ) Dean and Crowleyhave been tooling around play like besties , even while he was basicallytorturing Dean ’s admirer ’s mom . 4 ) The storage readiness demon is a total insanedouche .
In the end , Kevin ’s shade urges the Winchesters to stowtheir crap and stop being beggarly to each other — and even after promising to doKevin that favour , they both go back to ignoring each other and skulk intheir separate rooms in the trap .
And then there ’s the “ B ” plot , in which Castiel isonce again weirdly noble and long - suffering — at one full stop , he tellsBartholomew “ I ’m nobody , ” which seems like the ultimate solution of along menstruum of being broken again and again .
Castiel receive the last surviving member of a sect of angelscalled Penitents , who decided to live meekly on Earth among man , toreconnect with their original mission , and not to take part in any more bloodyangel wars . Which is why they were all hunt down and butcher byBartholomew , who ca n’t stomach any other angel faction .
The whole Bartholomew storyline has been on the back burnerfor long time , and here it come to a somewhat unceremonial close — or at least , Bartholomew himself does . There was some form of satire on televangelists andmegachurches and religious hucksterism engraft in all this , but it mostly gotlost along the way . What persist is that Bartholomew is the ultimate expedientsadist , who commits murder and atrociousness in the name of “ followingorders ” — or now , in the name ofkeeping order , I infer .
Bartholomew taste to recruit Castiel to team up up with him , sothey can track down Metatron and get back into Heaven . But Castiel remembershow Bartholomew tortured and killed prisoners back in the Clarence Shepard Day Jr. , and he ’s notgoing to enter in that sort of behaviour now — which is ostensibly anecessary status of their partnership .
Castiel gropes towards a philosophy of almost - pacificism — hewon’t fight , he wo n’t go to war , but he may apply force to defend himself , asBartholomew learns to his cost .
Castiel ’s been a tragical figure for so long , he ’s started tolose his pathos — but he gets a big clump of it back in this episode , wherehe ’s making tough selection rather of just suffering . He does n’t want torepeat his past mistakes of establish fearful alliances and remove in the nameof the greater well , but he ’s also not sure what else he can do . The irony isthat as shortly as Castiel decides he does n’t want to be a warrior or a leader , abunch of angels decide they want to fall out him . This should be interesting towatch .
