This metre of year , scarey - movie fans have many go - to favorites : Gremlins ; Silent Night , Deadly Night ; Christmas Evil . But there ’s one holiday horror classic that stands above the rest : Black Christmas , a enormously influential early slasher celluloid that has a distinctive tone and unusually textured part , both of which make it singular .

The tale will be conversant to anyone who ’s watched a splatter flick made in the last 40 years : A mathematical group of sorority sis , stalk by a merciless killer , are picked off one by one until the final girl remain . And there are other elements — drawn from urban legend and true - law-breaking headlines — that were n’t so warm up - over in 1974 , when Black Christmas made its unveiling , but are now bona fide clichés . This includes the third - enactment realization that the unbalance phone shout that’ve been terrorizing the new women the full moving-picture show are coming from inside the house . ( When a Stranger Calls , which used this same twist , paid homage when it came out in 1979 . )

However , the bones of Black Christmas ’ floor , which are more or less ingeminate ( with style and plot alterations , of row ) in films like Halloween , Friday the 13th , and Scream , are n’t really what make it memorable . This might not have been the case back in 1974 , but determine the film today , there ’s so much more go bad on than the fiend in the Ionic dialect .

The Christmas theme is as important as the title imply , but in a more abstractionist , scene - setting way . calamitous Christmas takes place in the last few day before the college shut down for winter pause . Everyone ’s look sharp around taste to finalize their architectural plan , not really keeping track of anyone else in the chaos . This mix-up factors into the first twosome of murder , as the dupe ’ disappearing are n’t really noted at first . The tardily - emptying sorority house — for all its colorful Christmas decorations — claim on a kind of somber still that extends to the neighborhood around it . “ Townies ” are the can of a few jocularity early in the film , but when a local female child is find mangle , the pallor hang over the proceedings turns to fear .

This menacing atmosphere , however , is more immediately patent to the interview than it is to the fiber — as it should be in any genuinely suspensive repulsion movie . And those characters are believably the self-aggrandizing reason why Black Christmas has become such a rage hit . Though music director Bob Clark ’s calling included another holiday ducky ( A Christmas Story ) , Black Christmas really also foreshadows a different Clark classic : Porky ’s .

Top of the grade is Margot Kidder ’s performance as the perpetually drunk , mischievously raunchy Barb ( four year prior to her turn as Lois Lane in Superman : The Movie ) ; it ’s still one of the greatest repulsion - movie supporting performance of all metre . All of her scenes are atomic number 79 — sassing back to the obscene speech sound telephoner , slurring at a cop that his “ position really sop up , ” pretending ( ? ) to give strong drink to a pint - sized Edgar Guest at a holiday company for underprivileged children . But as funny as her scenes are , she ’s not just there for mirthful relief . If you take in the moving picture closely , you see that while Barb may be a bit of a party young lady , there are reason behind her behavior . There ’s a bit too soon on where she grumbles in low spirits after her female parent calls to order her she ’s made other plans for Christmas ; later , she feels heartbreaking guilt over arguing with one of her sorority sisters who ’s since fail missing .

The primary character is Jess , work by Olivia Hussey ; she keep back a layer head despite all of the danger , and she ’s the soul the top cop , Lt . Fuller ( John Saxon ) , order in charge of keeping the caller talking once the constabulary tap the blood . But Black Christmas is careful not to make Jess merely a goody two - skid who ’s only in the movie to shout and stare at the telephone set ( though , admittedly , she does a fair amount of that ) . Jess has her own problems , above and beyond any murderous unknown . Her beau , Peter ( Keir Dullea ) , is a high - strung music student who endure off the deep end when Jess very calmly informs him that she ’s pregnant but design to get an abortion , and that it ’s not up for discussion . This subplot mostly serves as a way to get Peter into the movie — he ’s tease throughout as possibly being the weirdo in the bean . He seems a probable suspect , though the dots do n’t ultimately connect in the end . But the relationship also add stratum to Jess . She does n’t want to marry this guy , and she indisputable as hell does n’t want to have his sister . That does n’t think of she ’s always going to do the right thing — like , say , immediately fleeing the deuced house as before long as she learn the call are coming from you - know - where!—but she has her emotional priorities in order from the beginning .

Barb and Jess are the flawed , yet sympathetic characters who get the most screen door time . But Black Christmas manages to make even its supporting characters who get just a scene or two stand up out . I am very lovesome of jolly sorority house mother Mrs. Mac ( Marian Waldman ) , who drink even more than Barb via a cache of bottles she maintain creatively hide around the house ; the hapless phone - company tech who has to frantically rush up and down gangway of blinking boxes , trying to nail down exactly where the calls are coming from ; and a background actor who ’s just identified as “ Laughing Detective , ” who convulses with uncontainable guffaws in response to one of Barb ’s foul jokes . But there are so many more .

These character — all respond in their own direction to a situation that ’s only just emerging as something unimaginably nasty — grind Black Christmas in a room that ’s unusual for a horror film , where the master aim is usually just to scare the pants off the audience . It advise that even in times of crisis , when material mass are involved , sometimes humour will sneak out . Sometimes it pee multitude uncomfortable , like when it comes from Barb ’s sailor back talk ; other times it diffuses the tension , as when Jess and one of the other sisters think they ’ve spotted the killer at the threshold — but then tumble into giggles when they see it ’s just a pair of goofy quondam men serve with a search company .

Black Christmas not only does that — it also never reveals the killer ’s identity , never heed his motive or his origins , or why he keeps some of his all in victim pose like dolls in his ghastly lair . And somehow , that ’s exactly the unsettlingly eerie ending this standout film requires . Black Christmas , with its occasionally wacky case and its ever - shifting uneasy tone , exist in a specific prison term even before its own musical genre really did , and that ’s a quality that can never be twin .
