Border is one of those weird films where the find of what it ’s about is half the risky venture . It starts as one thing , becomes another , and then continues to get strange and more wonderful as it moves along . What you must make love , though , is discovering this oddball yet lyrical Swedish mystery is absolutely deserving it .
Directed by Ali Abbasi , Border begins with aborder guardnamed Tina ( Eva Melander ) who has a sure 6th common sense about multitude . She can just separate when someone is smuggle or doing something incorrect . In fact , she ’s never unseasonable until she meet one very peculiar man named Vore ( Eero Milonoff ) . Vore reminds Tina of herself , maybe a little bit too much , and meeting him changes everything she knows about life .
fundamentally , Border is a variety of offence story that becomes afish out of watermystery and then chemise into a journey of ego - discovery before circulate back on itself . It ’s a transformative outing that works on every story , thanks in part to Melander ’s turn as Tina . In a grievous and gorgeously understate performance , she plays a woman who is respectable at her job and lives a comfortable life , but not a specially happy one . She always feel like she ’s different , an outsider , and as she starts to project out why she is the means she , Border blossoms .
There are scenery in the middle of this film that are just gleeful . They ’re weird and worrisome , but at the same meter , they attractively show the excitation of a somebody finally feel like they go for the first time in their lives . These prospect specially work as a stark contrast to the glum , grounded tone of the rest of the film .
finally , thisfairy talerelationship ( in more elbow room than one ) takes a turn and Tina ’s personal growth — thanks to Vore — take a few truly messed up turns . Border make dark . It gets acute . And it gets its point across very , very clearly : Everyone deserves happiness , no matter what barbarous , mess up - up path they have to take to get there . Abbasi has made a very unexpected but very excellent flick , one that lay challenges and alteration in ways you ’ll never see total and might never forget .
Border played at Fantastic Fest 2018 and opens October 26 in theaters .
