I think the “ revulsion ” aspects of Carrie , while probably overbold and terrific when King wrote it , have become such mainstream storytelling tropes , it ’s harder for modern audience with mod sensibilities to see them as repugnance . Kind of like how 1970s “ heavy alloy ” bands like Black Sabbath and KISS seemed disgraceful and brutal back then , but today there are mainstream hard rock acts that are heavy and darker . A book like Carrie total out today would be sell as a science fiction thriller — or more potential a YA urban fantasy , with Carrie being the hero and going on to boast in two or more sequels .
