I have a friend , whom I wo n’t name , who takes the most awe-inspiring Instagram photos . They ’re stunning , every bit as good as anything shoot with a DSLR . And that ’s because they are shoot with a DSLR . Which suck .

If you are n’t intimate with it , Instagram is a social networking and camera cock that hold out entirely in an iPhone app . You take pictures , apply filters ( or not ) and apportion them on Instagram , which can also pipe up them to Twitter , Flickr , Facebook , Tumblr and a change of other societal networks .

Instagram does not have a web - upload pick . It scarce has a website . It ’s all fluid , and photos can only be look for - out through the app . Sure , each photo generates its own URL , but you could only get that URL if the exposure is post on another service like Facebook . And that ’s kind of the beauty of the whole affair . It celebrates our increasingly mobile culture . It label along with your friend everywhere they go , tucked off in their blue blue jean and messenger bags . now and then , they pull it out of their scoop , and share what they ’re seeing . And suddenly there you are , with them , link to one another through a piece of hardware descended from a technology that was created specifically to link up people . I ca n’t be the only one who finds that wonderful .

There is obviously no right means to Instagram . You use it for what you use it for . But certainly it ’s a societal connection that tracks what ’s go on now . When describing Instagram to friends who have n’t used it , I do n’t talk about the filters , or the quality of the photograph , I talk about how it let me see what my friend are doing properly now .

It is the speedy Flickr ; a visual Twitter .

And so when you post exposure from yesterday , or last week , or even a few 60 minutes ago that you took with your standalone camera , imported to your reckoner , processed with an app , and then synchronise back to your phone , you ’re slowing it down . break the flow . It ’s not unseasonable , per se , but it violates the spirit of the app .

It is , after all , Instagram , not Latergram .

There are a lot of places to showcase cracking picture taking online . Flickr , Picassa , Smugmug . I in full expect to see lots of awesome , highly sue gibe of pyrotechnic on those sites on July 5 and July 6 and , Hell , even July 10 . But on Instagram if I ’m seeing pyrotechnic shots a day or two after it ’s a small jarring . Moreover , if everyone starts using it the way my protagonist does , it ’s run to kill it . Instead of a window , it will become an archive .

And to be clear , this has nothing to do with the gamification lineament on Instagram . certainly , everybody loves to get their own niggling hearts and stars . But who cares how many likes somebody else ’s hooey gets ? at long last , it ’s not about that .

I do n’t like how many hearts my buddy gets ; I ’d just prefer to see where he is today or else of where he was yesterday .
