Spock . Data . Odo . Tuvok . T’Pol . Every Star Trek show postulate that aloof , nonhuman member of the squad to comment on the weirdly human things that happen to them in life on a Starfleet vessel , and Discovery is no exclusion — say hello to Lieutenant Saru , Doug Jones ’ freaky young Trek officer .
One of the uncanny second in Discovery ’s first trailer involves Saru — near the closing , where he casually tells Sonequa Martin - Green ’s Michael Burnham that his species can “ feel the coming of decease ” ( and that , of course , he can right away sense it coming in good order now ) . It ’s not only one of the weirdest , grimmest things you could materialize to say to someone in the middle of what is presumably a tense , potentially life - threaten scenario , but this “ demise sense ” is apparently a major part of Saru ’s species .
Revealed byEntertainment Weeklytoday , Saru is a Kelpian , the first of his kind to make it into Federation space and enlist in Starfleet , where he ’s a science officer aboard the U.S.S. Shenzhou . The reason Saru is the first is because on their homeworld , Kelpians are a “ prey species , ” perpetually being hunted by the planet ’s other major species , to the item that Kelpians develop to have heightened survival instincts , including the ability to smell straightaway mortal riskiness . If that was n’t a shitty enough creation , apparently Saru also faces a tough societal climate in the Federation , which manifestly search down on prey metal money like the Kelpians as being cowardly . So much for those develop utopian ethics !

Saru is all of those things and then some .
think the first trailer seemed to implysome fairly grim stuff is gon na go down in the early episodes of Discovery , it ’s seems more likely that Saru ’s going to spend most of his clock time severalise everyone about their imminent dying than doing much Science Officer - y clobber , though .
