Last Nox ’s Futurama took us on an incredible tour of Earth ’s intact history and divulge what the thirty-first century would look like without Fry around . Equal persona touching , screaming , thoughtful , and flat - out bonkers , this episode was everything Futurama should be .
Perhaps because it does it so sparingly , Futurama has an awe-inspiring runway record book with time travelling stories . After the show by design forfend the trope for three long seasons , “ Roswell That Ends Well ” ended up being the show ’s fine half hour . Although it ’s up against emphatically less stiff competition , the insanely twisty meter travelling caper “ Bender ’s Big Score ” is easy the good of the four videodisk movies , and the one that come closest to retake the hothead energy of the old series .
And then there ’s “ The recent Philip J. Fry . ” I ’m a big fan of some of this time of year ’s episode – “ Rebirth ” , “ Proposition Infinity ” , and “ Lethal Inspection ” are all really strong unveiling in young Futurama – but this installment was working on a whole other level . It was , as Elzar himself would put it , knocked up a mountain pass from previous episode of new Futurama ( and then he ’d charge me $ 50 for using his catchphrase ) .
It compound the light-headedly crazy ideas of “ The Duh Vinci Code ” , the trippy patch tortuosity of “ Rebirth ” , and the emotional reverberance of “ Lethal Inspection ” into this time of year ’s strongest effort thus far , throwing in the parallel storytelling of “ Luck of the Fryrish ” and cosmic oscilloscope of “ Godfellas ” for good standard . That ’s a passably all-fired safe formula , all things considered . So let ’s moot those first three chemical element from this season ’s earlier episodes one at a prison term .
It ’s hard to do much more than just give a washables leaning of all the amazing time periods Fry , Bender , and the Professor sojourn . The Futurama writers are clearly trying to check off every meter travel trope they had n’t yet done ( thus the Professor ’s marvelously degraded Hitler assassination ) , and it ’s great to see references to notability of the time travel submarine - literary genre , namely the Terminator moving-picture show , H.G. Wells ’s The Time Machine , and The Planet of the Apes ( or at least its more time - touch on aspects ) .
But the court are just the start of the fun – how can you frankly improve on a world where giraffe have enslaved humanity and have eaten all the leaves ? To a certain extent , I think the original Futurama pretty much contend with all the major laborious scientific discipline fiction tropes and conventions from books , TV , and movies ( with the still celebrated deletion of Doctor Who ) , and the new Futurama has somewhat much been left to come up with fresh , crazier science fiction estimation .
Thus we get a metre period where knights on ostrich use rust-brown brand to perform proctology exams on robots . I guess that might sound like not much more than a wacky science fiction mad - lib , but right now I am still very much digging these out there musical theme , in particular when set to a parody of “ In the Year 2525 . ” And if nothing else , that fast - forward through the integral history of the universe was one of the most amazing sequences Futurama has ever done , right up there with the oecumenical soar in “ Godfellas . ”
Part of the Brobdingnagian fun of “ The Late Philip J. Fry ” was seeing the hereafter ’s hereafter . It was truly shameful to see the immensely changed Planet Express headquarters of the years 3030 and 3050 , with the crew appendage provide behind slowly aging and crumble before our eyes . There was a unholy dimension to this alternate time to come – I can deal with old robot Amy and Hermes ’s header on a pogo marijuana cigarette , but Leela married to Cubert ! ? – but it was still keen just to see that these characters will eventually grow old and live full , long lifespan , even if this is the only metre we get a coup d’oeil of what their hereafter might mean .
And then Fry ’s natal day carte fluttered into 3050 . Futurama has always pull off diabolically complex plots with elan , and this was mere tiddler ’s child’s play liken to some of the narrative trickery we ’ve seen before . And yet it was the sort of simple spin that tied the two plot short letter together in a way that made pretty much perfect sense , and the aged Leela ’s pained reaction to the card compact a genuine emotional impact , even though I knew some sort of reset was coming and this timeline would be erased .
For in the closing , this episode was at its heart all about Fry and Leela . I give up on trying to stick out what their kinship is in anything but the most cosmopolitan terms . Clearly , the two characters have been through enough in the last ten days to experience they portion out something special , but both are too ill - equipped ( Fry intellectually and Leela emotionally ) to express their feelings properly until one of them is deadened or they ’re separated by billion of years . let the cat out of the bag about spare up all the romance for that one big grand gesture .
I feel jolly sure-footed saying that this is the first and only prison term geological deposition has play a major part in a love story , but it work bright in providing the other one-half of Fry and Leela ’s last messages to each other . This is still a show that like to put some violation into its most tender moments , with Bender casually burying their worldly duplicates ’ bodies decent beneath Fry and Leela , but the takeaway should be vindicated . Whatever Fry and Leela technically are as a couple in the here and now , they ’re ultimately two characters who wo n’t even let untold aeon of history keep them apart . “ The tardy Philip J. Fry ” tells us pretty much everything we need to know about who these two are .
