A few months ago the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency , or DARPA , announcedthe Grand Challenge , a Las Vegas to Los Angeles road race in which a road airstream in which all the contestants have to be “ autonomous motor vehicle ” that can push back and pilot entirely without any human control . The prize for this automatonlike Cannonball Run is a nerveless million bucks , which apparently attract so many entrants that DARPA had to winnow the field to just nineteen qualifiers , though they may had six more teams to make it an even twenty - five .
