Puzzle #28: Duck Duck Go
The Ugly Duckling is in the heart of a round lake when he spots the Big Bad Wolf lurking on the shore . The wolf can not float , and the duckling can not fly away from urine ( but can fly from soil ) . The wolf patrol the exterior of the lake waiting for the duckling to hand land so that he can banquet . The wolf move four time faster than the duckling can swim . He can see the duckling and is liberal to prowl along the shoreline however he want . How can the duckling make it to land and wing away without becoming the wildcat ’s dinner party ?
As usual , this is n’t a trick question . The reply is n’t “ the lake is frozen so the duckling can fly away ” or anything like that . There is a lawful strategy with mathematical reasoning behind it . Good luck !

Solution to Puzzle #27: Heads Up
Last weekI asked you to break down a twist on coin summerset .
You and I are go to settle something with a coin flip . rather of an ordinary coin toss , you ’ll call either “ HHT ” or “ THH ” . Then we ’ll flip the coin multiple times in a row and record the solution . If the sequence head , heads , tails occurs first then HHT wins and if the chronological sequence ass , heads , heads occurs first , then THH gain ground . We keep flipping until one of them occur .
Which do you call ? Or does it not count ?
What is the probability that each wins ?
THH wins 75 % of the clip and HHT only wins 25 % of the metre , so you should call THH . Shout - out to Enfy for the right solution and for noticing that the success is determined after only two flips .
If you flip a coin three times in closing off , the probability that the pass turn up heads , heads , tails is the same as the chance that they turn up tail end , head , forefront ( both ⅛ ) , so it ’s tempting to reason that the choice does n’t weigh .
