His Dark Materialshas return , and thing aregetting eldritch . The multiverse has open , and with it make out a whole new world(s ) of possibility . But the most significant thing it may do is finally work our two young Hero of Alexandria together , set the stagecoach for a destiny too powerful to neglect .
For those who ’ve show Philip Pullman ’s trilogy , “ The City of Magpies ” get us into the storyline of the second Bible , The Subtle Knife . The episode takes plaza soon after theseason one finale , which learn Lyra ( Dafne Keen ) entering the door create by her father , Lord Asriel ( James McAvoy , who is not present inthis sequence or season ) . She finds herself in Cittagazze , a gorgeous but forsake city that seems to carry a nifty mystery — and a terrifying evil . It all seems to hinge on a tower at the very top of the massive , King ’s Landing - esque anatomical structure . But we ’re not ready to go there yet , are we ?

The report here sees Lyra at the close thing to a low point . She ’s mourning the demise of her skillful friend Roger while dealing with the guilt about the office she played in bringing about his expiry . It ’s made it hard for her to believe anyone or anything — admit the alethiometer , which we see her repeatedly throw away aside as a harbinger of day of reckoning . But she ’s not broken , not in the least . It ’s these kinds of moments where Keen stupefy to run to her strengths — portray a persona who , even in her darkest present moment , strive to keep it together — and it ’s something I ’m hoping we get to see more of in the hereafter .
Finally , Lyra gets to get together Will ( Amir Wilson ) , who issue forth to Cittagazza through a window in his / our earthly concern . The two of them have trouble trusting each other at first — mainly because Lyra is horrified at the estimate of a person who does n’t have a daemon — but finally they originate to work together . I feel their first interactions were stifle and awkward in ways that feel extratextual , like the actors were struggle to enter out their dynamic . But I ’m sure that ’ll buff out in time . Individually , I thought they were gravid . One of my preferent moments was how Will cleaned the shatters of a cup that had broken when Lyra first attacked him . Without a word , it said everything you needed to know about him .
Back in Lyra ’s world , the witches are consider their next steps . Some of them care to go to war for Lord Asriel , mainly the newly come Queen Ruta Skaldi ( Jade Anouka ) , while others like Queen Serafina ( Ruta Gedmintas ) and Lee Scoresby ( Lin - Manuel Miranda ) require to get hold and protect Lyra . There ’s definitely more of an stress on the witches in this episode than I was expecting , include an extended action succession where Ruta Skaldi attacks a submarine so she can add up to the economic aid of a beldam whom Mrs. Coulter ( Ruth Wilson ) was torture … and deliver a near - fateful blow to the Magisterium ’s prevail cardinal . I ’m peculiar to see what happens with the witches in time of year two considering they kind of disappearance into the setting a bit in the 2nd book .

Most of Lyra and Will ’s time in the premiere is spent exploring individually , but once they observe each other they do endeavor to get to know each other — since they ’re from parallel worlds and that ’s moderately wild for both of them . They even come to realise they both live in alternate versions of Oxford and adjudicate to go find a “ scholar ” in Will ’s version who may be able to help Lyra . However , the episode stop on the theme of mystery .
Mrs. Coulter plots with Father MacPhail ( Will Keen ) to secretly permit the cardinal die so he can take over , promising it will be “ her sine . ” Meanwhile , as Will search over his sire ’s letters in private , Lyra pull out her alethiometer ( which she ’s besides kept veil from Will ) so she can come up out who he really is . This is where she discovers that he kill a man and that he has a greater destiny that ’s tied to Cittagazze . As Will look upon the tugboat and its many secrets , which will certainly be discovered in the come season , an evil presence called a Spectre looms behind him , ready to strike .
Assorted Musings:
I loved watching Ruta Skaldi and Serafina ’s daimon disputation as the witches did . The show seems to be get better at integrate the daemons , something that they struggled with early on ( partially because of the budget limitations ) .
We ’ve got a Lady Mormont cameo ! Game of Thrones ’ Bella Ramsey has joined the cast as Angelica , one of Cittagazze ’s few young survivors . It ’s Angelica who distinguish Lyra and Will about the Spectres — creature in the city who nurse the awareness out of you , leaving you an empty stubble , if you ’ve reached adulthood — and reminds Will that he might be on the chopping block soon because he ’s almost a grown - up .
Screw Angelica and those other kids for being dicks to a qat .

descry the ( book ) difference time ! In The Subtle Knife , it ’s Serafina who came to the aid of the young witch , granting her the passive expiry she was call for for . In the show , they changed it to Ruta Skaldi . I palpate this was a voguish choice , as it showed Ruta is more about taking action than Serafina — localise the stage for a bigger difference between the crone clans .
The omelet scenes might ’ve seemed a small weird , but trust me it was a whole affair in the book .
