Adventure riding is a fantastic way to be on two wheels . ADV bike allow us to smash up miles and carry loads ( and passengers ) in with child comfort and rest , while large displacement engines , long traveling respite , and governable locomotive , traction and abs feature let us to orient our bikes to the coating . The bikes can be sporting and are agile , despite their heft and geometry , supply a dominating sentiment of dealings in town , and well , they ’re big tidal bore twins , for the most part . Stonking torque means rafts of grin and deeply offended Audi drivers .

For some , the appealingness is mellow naut mi on - road touring on a comfy cycle , and OEMs tend to focus on that grouping , waive crash protection on standard fashion model to keep MSRPs appealing , sometimes declare oneself ( some ) improved off - road equipment on more dirt - focussed mannikin . The road - going common people in all likelihood wo n’t be calculate for auspices from flying rock candy and sharp boulders that can punch a crank suit . For those riders , an OEM accessory crash legal community or basic clash spool are an adequate choice .
3KG deviation in dry weights . 214 for my buddy Chris ’ Scrambler , 217 for my 1190 Adventure , and believably the most road desirable cycle to ever get to this minuscule gem overlookingKootenay Lake .
For those of us with off - road ambitions , well , we need a little more . Stout skidplates to protect our engines , upper clangoring bars to keep fuel tanks and body oeuvre out of harm ’s way , and some gravel - resistant kindling may be in order as well . go off the beaten way means preparing ourselves and our machines for the worst , and blend gamey tone OEM accessories with aftermarket upgrades to keep our machine dependable and give us piece of creative thinker .

Touratechhas a grand range of adventure - ready product for the big adventure bikes , and my 1190 was mature for some extra protection . I sum up Touratech ’s upper crash BAR , along with a lexan headlight defender to keep stone impacts from turning a late dark ride from awesome to frightening .
I start with the headlight guard for a lovesome - up install . When catch things in the mail service from afar , the good first step is to polish off and lay out all of the component of your software system , first , to check that everything is there , and 2d , to make indisputable you did n’t dismiss one of those small plastic bags behind the work airfoil in your service department . Once everything is out and machinate , count your parts to match the instructions , then get to oeuvre removing anything you need to remove .
Laying out parts before assembly helps you stay unionized , and observe you from wishing you knew where that last nylock nut went .

For the headlight safety machine , that meant remove the two turnkey that hold the front of the fairing infill to the headlight mount on the motorcycle , simply take the screws ( I like using T - handles for this , they ’re like a screwdriver with good purchase ) , then just attach your headlight guard mount to the front fairing .
Removing the stock shtup from the fairing infill with a T - handle . I have Motion Pro 1/4″ and 3/8″ drives with a detachable head .
I especially like to use Loctite in these humbled - torsion applications , bikes can be vibey and things can shake loose going down the road .

Screws , washers and spacers in property . It ’s a deal less fiddly to do this on the bench than seek to arrange everything one - handed while you ’re standing in front of the bike .
execute the bolt in , torque them to spec , and bond your headlight guard . Not today , rocks attempt to ruin that expensive LED headlight .
Next up , upper crash bar . The body panel on the 1190s are n’t meretricious , and I ’m short in the inseam ( 29″ on a good twenty-four hours ) so get something to protect my fuel tank and plastics is a great second of reassurance if I ’m riding outrageous , rocky terrain and the like . Same function for unboxing , put like with like , and arrange your parts severally for each side .

OEM supplement clangour bars that were match to this KTM when I bought it are swell , but offer zero coverage above the engine !
Touratech provide some stainless bolster to mount your upper Browning automatic rifle onto , they ’re optical maser cut from a piffling tube , so employ some side cutters to remove and deburr them before fasten them to the wheel , otherwise you ’ll scratch your expensive broken crash bars .
Doing this solo might forget you wishing for an spare hand , but it ’s manageable , just be patient . Start at the front and forge your style back , and only hand stiffen the fasteners to begin , as you ’ll need some wiggle room to get everything run along up afterwards . The fasteners for the smash stripe all fall with nice nylock ball , so you do n’t need to care about using Loctite here . Repeat the cognitive process on the other side , then move to the middle of the bike , just in front of the radiator , and snug those up by hand as well . Get everything just the style you like it and tighten down either side of the crash bars before finishing in the center .

Wrap the stainless sleeve around your clang stripe , then , guide the bar into place , slither the dash through the bar and back plate , then hand reduce for now , so you have some squirm way to align everything later .
Repeat the mental process on the other side , insure that you ’re not contacting the fairing when mount up is unadulterated
All is square and torqued to Touratech Specification . Time to ride ! ( Or , if you ’re like me , hold off 6 month until your alley is n’t 4″ deep in ice , then ride ! )

look up to your bicycle briefly , then , gear up and take it for a good flog around the vicinity . Recheck all of your fastener after the first ride , and enjoy .
