monkey-bread tree , the iconic nursing bottle tree of Africa and Madagascar , have a single congener , the boab , know in the Kimberley region of northwest Australia . No one know when and how the boab came across from Africa to Australia , or why its natural range is limited to this region .

In a study published recently inPLOS ONE , we solve one part of this mystery by testify that ancient Aboriginal peoples were responsible for spread the boab in the Kimberley .

The Boab Mystery

Anearly hypothesiswas that baobabs existed in parts of the supercontinent of Gondwana , which split up and became Africa , Madagascar and Australia more than 50 million yr ago . This was not very convincing because , for one thing , peninsular India was part of that massive continental breakout - up , but does not have any of its own baobab species .

Second , as bio - geographerPatrick Armstronghas pointed out , Australia has n’t always been where it is now . It was closer to the South Pole for a long fourth dimension after the split , and freewheel northward to its present position some 30 million years ago . The extreme climate variations during this long period would have pretty much killed off the Adansonia digitata .

The Gondwana hypothesis was effectively thresh out by botanistDavid Baum , when he did a genetic psychoanalysis of baobab coinage from Africa , Madagascar , and Australia . He feel that the three major branches separated just over 6 million year ago , long after Gondwana had split up up .

With this theory ruled out , the current one is that the boab ’s ancestor floated across the Indian Ocean and landed in northwest Australia , before adapting to its new home and evolving into a novel baobab species .

Another theory recently put forward byscientistJack Pettigrewis that human ancestors in Africa valued the baobab yield as food for thought and spread the cum wherever they went . When they migrated out of Africa some 70,000 days ago , they hold the yield pods with them and introduced the boab ’s ancestor when they arrive in northwestern Australia . The available evidence from the inherited analysis of Adansonia digitata , however , does not support this scenario .

Our written report study the genetic science of Kimberley boabs to see whether there was any variation across their natural range . There are distinctbiologicalbarriers in the Kimberley that have influenced the evolution of mammals such as rock brush kangaroo . We expected standardised patterns of variation in the boabs assuming that they had diffuse by floods and beast .

The results render the opposite : there was a quite a little of cistron flow and thus very trivial sport between boabs in different parts of the Kimberley , despite the cosmos of barrier . This think that boab seeds were being carried by some agent that was capable of move across these barrier . humankind were the most likely ones , but there was no way of proving it just with the familial data .

One way of tracking human agency is to look for linguistic clues . When masses extend things from one home to another , they also bring their countersign for these things . If the things are newfangled for the hoi polloi who receive them , they will unremarkably borrow the lyric for these and modify them in their own spoken communication . Or if they are already familiar with these thing , they may just summate the unexampled word into their vocabulary .

Studiesin Africashowed that there was a lot of diversity and borrowing of term for baobabs between speech . So we decided to compound the genetic and linguistic information for boabs in the Kimberley and represent them together to see what they would reveal .

When we mapped the patterns of boab gene flow and the movement of boab words between primeval lyric of the Kimberley , we were amazed by how intimately they gibe with each other . The overlap between the two was unassailable enough to prove that man were the main agent responsible for sprinkle the boab in northwesterly Australia . Evidence of boab come and seedpod remains from other studies ofAboriginal archaeologic sitesin the area confirmed it further .

But , then , another question amount up : if humans were the main agents , why were boabs limited principally to the Kimberley ?

Escaping Rising Waters

Two clues read up from the genic psychoanalysis : first , that the source for the present boab population was in uttermost northwest Kimberley ; and second , that there had been a genetic chokepoint or step-down in universe between 6 and 17,000 old age ago from which the present boabs had then expanded .

When we matched these clues with study of climate change since the destruction of the last Ice Age some 20,000 years ago , a clearer picture of human trend and the spread of boabs emerged .

How boabs came inland Image from Rangan et al . 2015

During the Ice Age , the Australian continental shelf extend much further out to the northwest , just under a few hundred kilometres from Timor . Boabs would have been distributed chiefly on the exposed ledge , and Aboriginal radical living in these areas would have used them . When the Ice Age stop and sea levels rose , the boabs on these orbit would have drowned by the implosion therapy .

With ocean waters pushing them further inland , the Aboriginal mathematical group inhabit in these orbit would have carried boab fruit fuel pod with them as they go into region of central and easterly Kimberley . They would have settled here and introduced the boab Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree and words to other Aboriginal groups .

So , if you ever call in the Kimberley region of northwest Australia , take some time to look at the boabs in the landscape and see what new clues they bring home the bacon . You might aid us puzzle out the rest of the closed book of how they got here from Africa .
