A New York City reporter received the surprise of a lifetime at work.

But when Ross went to send the broadcast back to the studio, one of her anchors asked, “Who’s that behind you?” She then turned around to find her boyfriend, Robert Tilearcio Jr., kneeling in front of a banner that read: “Will you marry me?”

“I’ve waited 10 years for this,” he said in the video. “You’re the love of my life, and I definitely want to ask, ‘Will you marry me?'”

“I love you, of course,” she tearfully answered.

Ross told PEOPLE that “it was the perfect way to celebrate out 10th anniversary” — and that she was actually “expecting the worst” when she first realized something was up.

“Between my producer in my ear repeatedly telling me to ‘wrap it up’ and my cameraman intensely pointing behind me, I was expecting the worst possible scenario. With all the violent attacks happening in New York City lately, I thought someone with bad intentions was getting too close for comfort and trying to disrupt our live shot,” she said. “So I abruptly ended the interview and finally turned around.

“I was relieved to see the love of my life down on one knee! The woman I was interviewing was in on the whole thing too! It was the perfect way to celebrate our 10th anniversary and begin the next chapter of our lives,” she added. “I’m so happy our friends and family were there and we’re pleased it was documented in this way. We look forward to showing it to our future children one day.”

The news station also shared the touching video on theirInstagrampage.

“Congrats to PIX11’s @michellearezouross ! 💍 She was doing a live interview when her FDNY boyfriend and family members surprised her in Battery Park,” they captioned the clip. “Spoiler alert: She said yes. ❤️”

“So happy for you and your fiancé, Michelle! What a proposal!” wrote one, while another added, “Congrats, Michelle! I am so happy for you! I keep crying every time I watch this!”

After saying yes, Ross showed off her ring and introduced her new fiancé.

Her mother then shouted in excitement, “We pulled it off!”

“You did a good job,” she said to her husband-to-be. “Thank you, guys.”
