Comedian Mike Epps and his wife, television producer Kyra Epps (née Robinson), are each other’s biggest fans.
“He’s really a strong person. I’m very proud of him and his integrity,” Kyra shared of her husband when they appeared on theTamron Hall Showin 2021. The admiration goes both ways for the actor and his wife, who married in 2019.
“We’re proud of each other. I’m in show business, I’m in front of the camera, but my wife is behind the camera person. Most of my jokes onstage, 60 percent of them, come from her,” Mike joked.
While both have thriving careers, they find a great deal of joy at home with their children, Indiana and Michael, whom they welcomed in 2020 and 2021, respectively. “The happiest thing in the world is to have a family, to be loved, to enjoy your life,” Mike told hostTamron Hall.
Kyra agreed, touching on what made their connection special. “When I met Mike, it just clicked: I need to have a family. He made me understand the importance of having your own people, that foundation, the true love," she added.

She initially wanted to be a journalist

Like her husband, Kyra is from the Midwest — while Mike grew up in Indiana, Kyra was raised in Chicago. Kyra toldRolling Outin 2018 that she initially wanted to be in front of the camera as a news anchor and attended Columbia College in the Windy City. She later interned for NBC’s investigative unit before having a change of heart.
Kyra then traveled to Costa Rica to study Latin American history and journalism before returning to Chicago and enrolling in a class that allowed her to move to Los Angeles for a few months, where she worked at Paramount Studios and Raleigh Studios.

“OnFix My Life, I help guide and lead the narrative on the show. It’s important for me as a producer to be responsible for the content that I put out regarding who I’m working for,” Kyra told Rolling Out of her role.
She continued, “I talk to a lot of guests, and people who come on the show, and it’s heavy-lifting. [There are] a lot of sleepless nights and long hours, but it’s rewarding because you inform the viewer, and help the guest gain clarity in their life."
Being a voice in her community is important to Kyra. “As a Black woman in a position of power, it’s our leadership and voice that shapes the culture, which is a big responsibility,” the producer shared. “If we have more Black women that have influence, we would see a substantial change in our community. If we have the voice, then we have the power.”
They met at an airport

According to Kyra, she and her future husband met at an airport in 2017.
“It was 6 A.M., I was half asleep, and he walked up to me and said, ‘Do you dance?’ I said, ‘What?! Do I dance? I’m a producer,’ ” Kyra recounted from the audience during a 2019 taping ofThe View.
Thankfully for Mike, she found the exchange funny, and their relationship started from there.
She and Mike produced the BET Social Awards together

In 2018, Mike and Kyra teamed up to executive produce the BET Social Awards, a special cable awards show that honored the year’s biggest social media moments, according toBusiness Wire.
She married Mike in 2019

Mike and Kyra tied the knot on June 23, 2019, at The Resort on Pelican Hill in Newport Beach, California.
Their 200-person guest list included celebrity friends likeSnoop Dogg(who skipped the BET Awards for the wedding) and T.I., who arrived in a helicopter. Mike shared onThe Viewthat they requested family members and friends to hand over their phones at the event for privacy.
“I wanna marry her again!” Mike said in a post-wedding appearance onThe View.
The pair admitted that he was overcome with emotion during the ceremony. “You meet somebody that’s so beautiful like Kyra … joy makes me cry, so I was just balling," he shared.
They share two children

Mike and Kyra welcomed their first child, daughter Indiana Rose, in March 2020.
One year later, she marked Indiana’s birthday with a heartfelt post. “My first full year as a mother, and I can honestly say from my heart it is the best thing I’ve ever known,” Kyra wrote in a since-deleted Instagram. “A newborn during Covid was not easy. … But loving, guiding, and protecting her has been the most natural feeling I’ve ever felt."
Mike has four daughters — Madison, Moriah, Makayla and Bria — from previous relationships, and he said in 2016 that he wanted to have a son.
“My mother had eight sons and one girl. My mother cried every day. A woman can’t control a little boy that much,” the comedian told PEOPLE. “You think they can, but it’s like dealing with a little man. I think the gene pool switched up.I had all the girlsthat she wanted!”
Kyra also wanted more children, specifically to give Indiana siblings close to her in age to play with.

“Our two little ones are growing up on the same block as Mike did in the ‘70s,” Kyra shared in a press release, according toThe Indianapolis Star. “We decided to spend more time in Indianapolis so our children could understand the importance of family and their family history."
She added, “I am excited to bring my design style to the neighborhood for future families to experience.”
Before the show premiered in the fall of 2023, Mike and Kyra had already renovated several properties in the area, includinga firehousein 2020. In the episodes, they also renovated his grandmother’s house.
In March 2023, Mike toldJennifer Hudsonthat his late mother inspired the show. “My mom loved interior decorating, that was her thing. She used to watchThis Old HouseandBetter Homes & Gardensbooks were always around,” he said.
